Discs & Blu-ray

8001003DInsert the game disc

The game needs its disc in the drive to start.

Fix: Insert the disc. For backups, mount the game first in webMAN MOD or multiMAN, then start it.

8001003EInsert the game disc

Same as 8001003D: the game wants its disc.

Fix: Insert the disc, or mount the backup in webMAN MOD / multiMAN before starting it.

8001050BHDD demo won't start with a disc in

A game or demo on the hard drive won't start while a Blu-ray is inserted.

Fix: Eject the disc and restart the PS3.

8001050DStart error after swapping discs

The disc was swapped too quickly.

Fix: Go back, reinsert the game disc and wait for it to load.

80010514Disc can't be read

The disc is dirty or scratched, or the Blu-ray drive/laser is failing.

Fix: Clean the disc and try another one. If every disc fails, the Blu-ray drive needs repair. On a hacked PS3 you can still play backups from the hard drive.

80010516Disc can't be loaded

The disc couldn't be loaded (also seen with PS1 discs).

Fix: Reinsert or clean the disc. If every disc fails, the drive may need repair.

80029906Home-burned Blu-ray rejected

The PS3 says a home-made BD-R is an invalid disc.

Fix: Re-author the disc with up-to-date software and burn it again (e.g. with ImgBurn).

80029940Video can't be played

A Blu-ray or DVD film won't play, usually because the disc is dirty or damaged.

Fix: Clean the disc, restart the PS3 and try again. If only that disc fails, exchange it. Keep the system software up to date for newer films.

80029945Blu-ray movie won't play

The Blu-ray film couldn't be played.

Fix: Try another disc. If no Blu-rays play, the drive may need repair.

80029946Disc or file not recognised

The format isn't supported, or the disc is from another region.

Fix: Check the file type and the disc's region. Clean the disc.

8002997FBlu-ray drive authentication failed

The Blu-ray drive failed its security check, usually a hardware fault.

Fix: The drive needs repair or replacing. On Fat models a replacement drive must be paired to the board.

HEN, CFW & homebrew

80010002multiMAN won't load ISO

multiMAN rejects an ISO stored on an external NTFS drive.

Fix: Put the ISO in /dev_hdd0/PS3ISO, or mount it with webMAN MOD, which can load ISOs from NTFS drives.

80010007File isn't a valid program

The PS3 doesn't recognise the file as a program (not a valid ELF/SELF). Can also show while a disc is being swapped.

Fix: Download the app or PKG again (check its MD5 if given). With a disc, wait for the drive to finish and retry. On HEN, install the game's official update PKG and make sure its licence (RAP) is in place.

80010009Operation not permitted

The app isn't allowed to start, for example a debug-signed app on a retail PS3.

Fix: Make sure HEN is enabled, and use the retail (CEX) build of the app rather than a debug (DEX) one.

80010017Game or app failed to start

The PS3 refused to authorise the program (SELF authentication failed).

Fix: On a hacked PS3: this usually means HEN isn't enabled: run ★ Enable HEN and try again. Some apps also need CFW. With a retail disc: clean the disc, delete the game data and reinstall it.

80010019System software too old

The game or app needs a newer firmware version.

Fix: Update the PS3. If it's hacked, update to the latest HFW (then re-enable HEN), not official firmware. See the Jailbreak Checker.

8001001AFatal authentication error

A serious error happened while the PS3 checked the program.

Fix: Enable HEN, then download and reinstall the app.

8001002CToo many files open

Too many files were open during a PKG install, often from a corrupt PKG or a cluttered USB drive.

Fix: Download the PKG again, reformat the USB drive as FAT32 and keep only what you need on it.

80022D35Trophies couldn't register

Trophy install fails when starting a game, seen with ISOs on HEN.

Fix: Delete the game's data and trophy folder, rebuild the database, then start the game again.

80028F14Error online with custom syscalls

A CFW error when going online or launching homebrew while custom syscalls are active.

Fix: Disable syscalls (in CFW settings or webMAN MOD) before signing in to PSN; restart to get them back.

80029517Licence/activation mismatch

A bought PSN game won't run because the user's activation file (act.dat) was made by homebrew rather than PSN.

Fix: Delete act.dat in /dev_hdd0/home/000000xx/exdata/, then deactivate and reactivate in Account Management → System Activation. Signing out of PSN fixed it for some.

80029536Licence file check failed

An EDAT licence/data file failed its signature check.

Fix: Download the content again or use the correct matching licence file.

80029537Wrong licence type (PS1 Classic)

A PS1 Classic's data file has the wrong licence type.

Fix: Rebuild or re-download the PS1 Classic package with the right licence type.

80029566Package format not supported

The PKG couldn't install, for example because its file name is too long.

Fix: Rename the PKG to a short name, and download it again if it might be corrupt.

80029567PKG blocked or corrupt

The package can't install: HEN/CFW isn't active, or the PKG is badly built (seen with PS2 Classics PKGs).

Fix: Enable HEN (or boot CFW) before installing. Rebuild or re-copy the PKG and check it with a PKG checker. If a debug-PKG enabler was used earlier, restart first.

8002AE04PKG install failed

The PKG (or a HEN update package) is corrupt or incomplete.

Fix: Download the PKG again from a trusted source and check it with a PKG checker before installing.

8002AE32Install All Packages blocked

"Install All Packages" on CFW fails because it's a debug option.

Fix: Turn on QA flags (Rebug Toolbox or Custom Firmware Tools). It doesn't work on HEN.

Hard drive, USB & data

80010006File missing or can't be read

A file is missing or corrupt. Also appears when a PKG file has an invalid name.

Fix: Delete the game or app and install it again. For PKGs, use the original file name. If it keeps happening, use Restore File System in the Recovery Menu. For game data, delete it in Game → Game Data Utility, run Restore File System and Rebuild Database, then reinstall.

8001000ADrive busy

A drive was busy, usually during a transfer to USB storage.

Fix: Make sure the USB drive is firmly connected and don't remove it mid-transfer, then try again.

8001000BCan't access the drive

The internal hard drive, external drive or USB stick can't be accessed.

Fix: Check the cable and try another USB port. USB sticks must be FAT32. If several drives fail, the PS3 may need repair. On a Super Slim with the internal 12 GB storage, repeat Restore File System in Safe Mode until it reaches 100%.

80010023Drive is full

There's no free space on the drive being written to.

Fix: Delete unused games, game data or videos (Game → Game Data Utility), then try again.

80010026Drive is read-only

The write failed because the drive is read-only.

Fix: Make sure the USB drive is FAT32 and not write-protected, or copy to the internal hard drive instead.

80010029File is damaged

The PS3 tried to open a damaged file.

Fix: Delete the file and download or copy it again from a good source.

8001002BData couldn't be read

The PS3 couldn't read or mount data on the disc or hard drive, usually when starting a game.

Fix: Clean the disc. Delete the game's data (not saves) in Game → Game Data Utility and let it reinstall. If it happens with everything, run Restore File System then Rebuild Database in Safe Mode; the hard drive may be failing. On CFW it has also been caused by installing Rebug Toolbox on a non-Rebug firmware.

8001002FDrive unusable during setup

A Super Slim couldn't use its hard drive during setup or data migration.

Fix: Wipe the drive on a PC (or zero its first sector), refit it, then set it up again from Recovery Mode.

80010036Couldn't delete

Deleting data failed, which points to a hard drive or file system problem.

Fix: In Safe Mode run Restore File System. If that fails, back up and use Restore PS3 System (erases everything).

80010038Game data couldn't be read

The game or its data couldn't be read or installed (dirty disc, corrupt data or a damaged file system).

Fix: Clean the disc, run Restore File System in Safe Mode, then reinstall or re-download the game.

8001003ADrive removed during install

The storage device disappeared mid-install (e.g. the USB stick was unplugged).

Fix: Keep the drive connected and start the install again.

80010510Installed game won't start

A game installed on the hard drive won't start. The cause isn't clear.

Fix: Restart the PS3, then delete and reinstall the game.

800283E4Backup failed

The Backup Utility couldn't finish.

Fix: Try a different drive, and back up items in smaller batches.

80028F08Data corrupted

Data on the hard drive is corrupted, often a sign the drive is failing.

Fix: Run Restore File System in Safe Mode. If it comes back, back up and replace the drive.

80028F22Hard drive error

The internal hard drive reported an error.

Fix: Run Restore File System in Safe Mode.

80029301Couldn't delete item

An item (for example PS2 data on a virtual memory card) couldn't be deleted.

Fix: Restart and try again. If it keeps happening, run Restore File System in Safe Mode.

80029564Package corrupt or can't install

The PKG is corrupt, or its requirements (firmware, licence) aren't met.

Fix: Download the PKG again and check its MD5. On HEN, enable HEN before installing. Some PKGs also need a licence (RAP) or newer firmware.

80029C55Lost connection to USB drive

The PS3 lost contact with the USB drive while copying or playing, usually from a power dip.

Fix: Unplug other USB devices (like a charging controller) so the drive gets enough power, or use a powered drive/hub.

80029C68Corrupt data on a drive

Data on a drive (usually an external one) is corrupt.

Fix: Delete the corrupt data, or back up and reformat the drive. If it blocks updates too, run Restore File System in Safe Mode (back up first).

8002AE21Can't overwrite existing content

A file or demo can't replace the copy already on the hard drive.

Fix: Delete the existing copy first, then install or download again.

8002F165Hard drive data corrupted

Data on the internal drive was corrupted, usually after a failed system update.

Fix: Format the drive (Recovery Mode → Restore PS3 System) and reinstall the firmware from USB. This erases everything.

The update won't start after fitting a new hard drive.

Fix: In Recovery Mode run Rebuild Database, then Restore File System, then System Update.

8002F310Update loop after drive upgrade

The firmware update loops after fitting a bigger hard drive.

Fix: Try updating in Recovery Mode with another drive fitted, then put your drive back. Not a guaranteed fix.

8003041CDatabase error

The system's database is damaged.

Fix: Run Rebuild Database in Safe Mode.

80030517Large file won't copy

A large media file failed to copy.

Fix: Files over 4 GB can't go through a FAT32 USB drive: split the file, or copy over the network.

8003051ECouldn't save

The game couldn't save, usually because space is low or data is damaged.

Fix: Free up space on the hard drive. If it continues, use Restore File System in the Recovery Menu.

80030920Copy failed

The file is corrupt or there isn't enough space.

Fix: Copy it again from the original and check free space.

80710A06Download couldn't install

A PSN download failed to install, possibly because the data is corrupt.

Fix: Delete it and download it again from the Download List. HEN users: if the HEN install site won't open, type http:// instead of https://. It can also be caused by a wrong clock: set it via Settings → Date and Time Settings → Set via Internet.

81019002Couldn't copy save data

Saved data couldn't be copied.

Fix: Restart and try again. If it keeps failing, check the hard drive.

System updates

The connection dropped during a system update.

Fix: Wait a while and run System Update again, or update from USB.

80029530Game needs its update

The game's program doesn't match what the system expects, usually because a required game update is missing.

Fix: Install the latest official update for the game.

80029563Update or package failed

The package (often a game patch) is corrupt or its requirements aren't met.

Fix: Delete the partial download, check free space and download it again. If it keeps failing, run Restore File System in Safe Mode. On HEN, if HEN's own update fails, reinstall HEN.

80029C77Update failed

The system software update failed.

Fix: Update from Safe Mode (option 6) using a USB stick with PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP.

80029CCAData corrupted installing D-REX

Installing debug (DEX) firmware failed because the console is still set up as retail (CEX).

Fix: Dump the keys and convert the console to DEX with Rebug Toolbox first, then install D-REX.

8002F029Update file invalid

The update file is damaged, unofficial or named wrongly.

Fix: Download the official update again and save it as PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP on a FAT32 USB stick.

8002F07CUpdate won't install

The system update fails (seen near 95%).

Fix: Download the update on a PC and install it from USB. If it still fails, try another hard drive or get the console repaired.

8002F142Update file couldn't be read

The update file on the USB stick couldn't be read.

Fix: Reformat the stick as FAT32 (MBR), download the update again and check its MD5. Try another stick.

8002F147Update file couldn't be read

The update couldn't be read from the USB stick or the download failed.

Fix: Download the update again and check its MD5. Use another FAT32 stick, or update over the internet. Removing the internal clock battery for a minute or two, or reformatting the drive and reinstalling from USB, has also worked.

8002F14EUpdate failed: drive not detected

Most often the Blu-ray drive isn't detected (faulty or disconnected drive or cable). Less often a flash memory problem.

Fix: Check the Blu-ray drive and its ribbon cable. Firmware updates need a working drive. If the drive is fine, get the console checked. One user fixed it by opening the console and reseating all internal cables and the hard drive. Before anything else, unplug the power and all USB devices for 10 seconds and retry.

8002F156CFW install fails around 42%

The firmware install stopped partway, linked to a failing or corrupted hard drive.

Fix: Format the hard drive, reinstall official firmware, then CFW. If one CFW keeps failing, try another.

8002F157Data corrupted installing CFW

A firmware install error, seen when switching between certain CFW/downgrade setups.

Fix: Install official firmware (twice), restart after the flash write, then install CFW again.

8002F163Install fails early

The firmware install failed at about 2%, after an earlier install had failed.

Fix: Format the hard drive on a PC, reinstall official firmware from Recovery Mode, then try CFW again.

8002F169Downgrade or patch rejected

The CFW install or downgrade is refused because the QA flag isn't active, or a flash patch went wrong.

8002F271Format or update failed

The update or hard drive format fails, usually after a drive swap.

Fix: Format the drive on a PC, then install the update from a FAT32 USB stick. If it still fails, the drive is probably faulty.

8002F281Update failed: hard drive or Wi-Fi board

The hard drive or the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth board caused the update to fail.

Fix: Check the hard drive is seated properly. Try the update from the Recovery Menu. A failing hard drive may need replacing. If it happens while reinstalling firmware, check the drive on a PC; formatting it on the PS3 often fixes it.

8002F2B5Update file rejected (Recovery)

The firmware file isn't accepted as a valid update.

Fix: Check it isn't named PS3UPDAT.PUP.PUP (turn on file extensions in Windows). Re-download it if needed.

8002F2C5Update data corrupted (Recovery)

Recovery Mode couldn't read the update file, often when installing HFW/CFW.

Fix: Use a different USB stick (FAT32, MBR). On CFW, redo the flash-patch step before installing.

8002F2E4Update data corrupted after drive swap

The firmware install reports corrupt data, seen after fitting an SSD.

Fix: Download the update again from another source, check its MD5 and install from Recovery Mode. If it still fails, try a different drive.

8002F313Update stuck near the end

The update hangs around 99%.

Fix: Give it plenty of time. If it stays stuck, update from USB in Safe Mode, or try another hard drive.

8002F314Restore or update failed

A system restore or update didn't finish.

Fix: Turn off, wait, and retry from Safe Mode. If it keeps failing, the console needs repair.

8002F325Same Rebug version won't reinstall

After a drive upgrade, Recovery Mode can't install the Rebug version that's already on the console.

Fix: Install a different firmware or version from Recovery Mode first, then reinstall Rebug from the XMB.

8002F334Update fails around 50%

The update stops partway and the PS3 loops, often on drives that once had CFW.

8002F957CFW install rejected

Installing CFW over official firmware fails (around 70%), usually because the flash wasn't patched first.

Fix: Patch the flash first (see the Jailbreak Checker guides), then install CFW, or use HFW + HEN instead.

8002F994Update download failed

The update server is busy or the download failed.

Fix: Try later, or install the update from a USB stick. It can also mean a failing hard drive: if retrying never works, try another drive.
