Is my DualShock 3 fake?

Tick each check your controller passes. One miss can be wear and tear; several usually means a fake.

14 more checks (PC tests, Move & Navigation)
  • Analog stick seams: The moulding seams around and below the analog sticks, where the two shell halves meet, look sharper and rougher on clones.
  • Charging needs a USB host: A genuine DS3 has to be woken by a USB host before it charges or works; Sony's own chargers handle this automatically.
  • Name reported by a PC (Shanwan/Gasia clones): Plug it into a Linux PC by USB and read dmesg: many clones identify as SHANWAN or GASIA even when lsusb shows a Sony ID.
  • Bluetooth MAC address (OUI) and USB descriptor: DsHidMini's ControlApp on Windows can compare the controller's Bluetooth MAC prefix with Sony's published OUI list; a mismatch is a strong hint the controller is aftermarket.
  • LED pattern ignored on PC: Some clones never show the player-LED pattern that the driver or console sends, and software can't fix this.
  • Counterfeit colours: When counterfeits flooded the market around PS3 firmware 3.00 (2009), white DS3s were the main colour reported as fake.
  • Sony's own warning: Sony Europe warns that counterfeit PS3 wireless controllers can look practically identical to genuine ones, may stop working after a system software update, and may be a fire or injury risk.
  • Battery label inside: If you open the controller, a genuine DS3/Sixaxis pack is labelled LIP1359 or LIP1472 (3.7 V 570 mAh/2.1 Wh, typ.
  • Board markings: Genuine DS3 boards carry Sony board codes such as MSU_VX3, MSU_VX4, MSU_VX5 or MSU_VX6.
  • Bluetooth name and device type (Gasia clones): On a PC, a genuine pad calls itself 'Sony PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller'.
  • 'DS3' that's only a USB adapter: Some cheap wired pads and adapters report Sony's DS3 ID (054C:0268) but have no Bluetooth or real motion sensors.
  • Move: port matches the model: A genuine original Move (CECH-ZCM1x) has a mini-USB port and reports USB ID 054C:03D5.
  • Move: label and battery details: The label should give a model of CECH-ZCM1 plus a region suffix (U, E, J, H, M or JD).
  • Navigation controller: model and USB ID: A genuine Navigation controller is labelled CECH-ZCS1 plus a region letter and reports USB ID 054C:042F, its own product ID that is different from a DS3's.

Model numbers come from Sony’s own compatibility lists and manuals, manufacturer support pages, PSDevWiki and Wikipedia. Got a model number that isn’t here? Let us know. Seeing a pairing or Bluetooth error? Try the error code lookup.
